Our story: The heart of Redcar's coast
Discover the journey of Stray Cafe, from its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved seaside spot for generations.

Our humble beginnings by the sea
The Stray Cafe’s story began in 1989, when at just 19 years old I first took on the old seasonal cafe that had stood on the site for over 100 years. The building had a remarkable history — during World War II it was closed and used as a lookout point for bombers over the North Sea — but by the early 2000s it was in a terrible state, with 12 holes in the roof, no central heating, no double glazing and no side windows. An engineer’s report even warned that the building could eventually blow away. After having a vivid dream about rebuilding it, I told my Dad, who encouraged me to go for it, and together in 2005 we completely demolished and rebuilt the cafe from the ground up.
Dad was with me every step of the way throughout the 16-week transformation, turning “the dream” into reality. What had once only opened seasonally immediately became a huge success, and today The Stray Cafe proudly opens 363 days a year, closing only on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, continuing a tradition of serving the community that has existed on the site for more than a century.

More than just a cafe: A family welcome
From the moment people walk through the doors of The Stray Cafe, we want them to feel relaxed, welcome, and completely at home. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick coffee, a family breakfast, or a catch-up with friends, our goal is to create a warm and friendly atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable.
Built on family values and community spirit, Stray Cafe is designed to be more than just a place to eat — it’s somewhere people can slow down, enjoy great food, and make lasting memories by the sea.

Redcar's heart by the sea
Stray Cafe has always been proud to be part of the Redcar community. Over the years, we’ve become a place where locals, families, workers, and visitors can come together, whether it’s for a morning coffee, a family meal, or a friendly catch-up by the sea.
As a family-run cafe, community has always been at the heart of everything we do. We value the relationships we’ve built with our customers over the years and take pride in creating a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels like part of the family. From supporting local people to being a familiar face on the seafront, Stray Cafe is proud to be a place that Redcar can call its own.
